FUNCTIONAL MANUAL THERAPY®
Functional manual therapy® is a system of treating the body, developed by the Institute of Physical Art. It is an excellent approach for treating all movement related conditions.
This method of treatment is hands-on and involves active movement and participation of the client to mobilize restrictions in fascia (connective tissue) surrounding the joints, soft tissues, nerves, or viscera.
Because these mobilizations are hands-on, active and highly specific, we can begin to strengthen neural patterns of movement, which are then incorporated into facilitating and retraining local and global movement patterns with specific movements and exercises.
Rather than symptom focused, it is quality of movement focused. Within this paradigm, we may find that an area of the body distant from the symptom may actually be the driver of the symptom.
You don’t have to be injured or in pain to benefit from functional manual therapy®. Because it is function based vs.
symptom based, it also works great for the following-
Movement Optimization
When our bodies are moving efficiently, we perform better. Whether your interest is to run a marathon with a faster time, practice yoga without pain, or get up and down from the floor with your grandkids, I can assess and treat joint mobility and movement patterns to help you reach your movement potential!
Injury Prevention
Due to previous injuries, surgeries, or ingrained movement patterns, we can have areas of our bodies that are “stuck”. These stuck places decrease our options for movement and may lead to excessive wear and tear or injury to other structures, Thus, assessing and treating functional movement patterns can prevent injuries down the road.
